Westfield Arts College called on local builder C G Fry & Son to help them cultivate a neglected plot of land at the school, to create a new garden for 6^th form students. The special school in Weymouth, serves the needs of 180 children and young people aged from 4 – 19 with moderate and complex learning difficulties.

Sarah Jeffcott, Head of the school’s 6th form approached C G Fry’s commercial director, Mike Dear who is the father of Tommy, a Post 16 student at Westfield, to see if they could offer assistance with this special renovation project. The award-winning builder subsequently called on the services of Sherborne-based company Queen Thorne Lawn & Landscape, who have worked with Fry’s for over 16 years on many of their developments across Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset, including the prestigious Poundbury development.

Queen Thorne ‘jumped to the rescue’, offering two members of the staff free of charge to work on the overgrown 200 sq. metre area of land. The dedicated landscaping team removed debris, treated weeds, fertilized and rotovated the plot and in addition, supplied compost and turf at cost. The 6^th form students were fully involved throughout the process in helping to create a flourishing new garden. On completion of the project, C G Fry & Son presented the students with an electric lawnmower and accessories so they can now keep the grass in tip-top condition.
