The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation CIHT (SW) held a glittering awards ceremony recognising positive projects in the South West region for 2023/2024. Attracting 150 guests, it was hosted at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel and generously supported by headline sponsor WSP.
The annual South West Region Awards celebrate innovative and pioneering transportation schemes in recognition of the outstanding contribution that good projects and people make to our daily lives. CIHT SW Region Chair, Hannah Clark gave a welcome address and a presentation on the industry was given by CIHT (UK) President Karen McShane. Celebrating the very best the region offers across key areas of highways and transportation, CIHT is open to everyone; members and non-members; small and large organisations; public, private, and third sector.
150 guests enjoyed a three-course banquet and entertainment with renowned magician Dan Brazier. Based in the South West but working around the world, Dan has studied magic for many years and still comes up with new ideas and ways of presenting his amazing special effects. Post dinner the excitement grew with the Chair announcing the industry awards ceremony was about to begin.
Hannah Clark CIHT (SW) Chair: “With seven awards we were delighted to have such an incredible response celebrating the best of the region’s transport from 2023. A diverse region, from Cornish coastal villages, the rurality of Dartmoor and Exmoor, the innovation at Hinckley Point, and the city steeped in the engineering history of Bristol, we’re faced with wide-ranging, unique transport issues. And with challenges come opportunities so I was delighted to have been able to shine a light on where we’ve utilised these opportunities and showcase the achievements that many of the guests will have played a part in.”

Each year CIHT (SW) is proud to support a local worthy cause and for 2024 it chose Coexist Community Kitchen CIC, based in Bristol. Becky Millington, ‘Marketing & Fundraising Lead’ for the non-profit school gave a heartwarming speech saying they see food as the most simple and easy way to support each other in building a stronger, healthier, and more joyful society. Generous donations for the raffle and auction by local businesses raised £2,225. Becky announced that Coexist Community Kitchen was eligible for match-funding and therefore able to double the donations to a grand total of £4,450 and how it would make such a big difference to their new kitchen project.
Glen King based in Exeter has been organising the CIHT (SW) industry awards event for 14 years. As the CIHT President for 2024 I had the privilege of working with Glen who oversaw all aspects held at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel.
The event was a huge success and Glen worked tirelessly to ensure it all went well without a hitch. Post-event she created PR coverage across many genres, including a full-page with Rail Construction News, which showcased the glittering industry awards across the Southwest.
Karen McShane – UK President CIHT 2023/2024.
