SDS Engineering Consultants, announces the appointment of James Laughlin as its new regional director. With offices in Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol, the company employs 54 staff offering a full range of mechanical & electrical (M&E) engineering services design. Designing innovative, flexible, energy-efficient solutions, they look to create exceptional environments for living, work or leisure.

The company has grown rapidly since it was established in Plymouth in 2004 and now has over 50 technical engineering staff supported by an administrative team based at the practice’s head office located in The Millfields. The company is working on or have recently completed a number of high-profile projects in the region including: Plymouth projects Oceansgate Marine Campus – 7.8m facility to provide office, research development and light industrial uses at the gateway to the Marine Industries campus, and 4.3m new education facility for Scott Medical & Health College facility. Also the 2.4m Gym & Dance studio extension as part of Exeter College’s masterplan and the 10m Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education (ERADE) development.

An award-winning chartered mechanical engineer, newly-appointed James has a wealth of consultancy experience having worked on local, national and international projects ranging from 100k – 650m. As a new regional director for SDS, James brings his extensive experience in building physics and BIM workflows, building on the achievements of the practice. He said: “This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and well-established business, whose strengths are clear in the quality of forward-thinking building services engineering, and a genuine focus on the built environment and people. I will be looking to build on the excellent work so far and further develop the business to be the leading building services consultancy in the region.”

James joins his fellow directors on the management board led by Managing Director, Shaun Hoppins. Shaun commented: “We are investing significantly to develop our resources, systems and infrastructure to facilitate continued expansion of our business, and are therefore delighted, to welcome James to our expanding team. James’s expert knowledge, gained through delivery of a large project portfolio across various sectors, will be a great boost for the business. His enthusiasm and passion for engineering will be a real asset to the company and I know he’s looking forward to supporting our clients and driving further growth across the region.”
