23rd May 2017A family-owned business based in Woodbury, has launched a new range of completely chemical-free children’s mattresses using cool Alpaca wool, sourced mostly from Devon. Cottonsafe Natural Mattress Company is headed up by husband and wife team Mark and Liz Dowen who design and manufacture 100% natural biodegradable, sustainable and truly natural mattresses which are completely chemical free. The pioneering duo developed Cottonsafe – a unique and revolutionary patented method of blending organic cotton and pure wool; surpassing the highest levels of UK Fire Regulations. It’s the only one of its kind in Great Britain, and believed worldwide!
The natural material called Cottonsafe has taken three years to research, test and develop and is a new method of blending organic cotton and pure British Sheep’s wool, to create a range of chemical-free mattresses. The company’s mid – luxurious range uses Dartmoor wool from a local farm, which is naturally washed and hand-teased to complete the lavish wool layers in the Cottonsafe mattresses, and are hand-tufted. Due to its hygroscopic nature, the wool dramatically increases the breathability of the fabric allowing good ventilation, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The increased ventilation and airflow also helps keep the mattress fresh and dry.
Mark Dowen, Managing Director – Cottonsafe Natural Mattress Company said: “In all our Cottonsafe mattresses, we use no chemicals, glues or adhesives. The breathable fabric, combines the natural and warm properties of wool, with the perfect absorbency of cotton to keep you cool, helping regulate sleeping temperatures throughout the night for optimum comfort to aid a restful sleep.” He adds: “We are delighted to announce that we are now able to offer a new range of children’s mattresses made with luxurious alpaca layers instead of lamb’s wool. The fleece is the natural fibre harvested from an alpaca, which is soft, durable, luxurious and silky. Whilst similar to sheep’s wool, it’s softer, even more breathable and temperature regulating with no lanolin, making it hypoallergenic. Alpaca is also naturally water-repellent and fire resistant.”
Liz Dowen, Director – Cottonsafe Natural Mattress Company also works for the National Children’s Bureau and is a sleep practitioner for The Children’s Sleep Charity. She comments: “We have designed the new mattresses after receiving lots of enquiries about using our Cottonsafe material to produce mattresses specifically for children and to create a product which is more affordable for parents. Cottonsafe uses natural materials to pass the stringent UK fire regulations with no added chemical, which makes the Cottonsafe children’s mattresses a natural, chemical free alternative to keep your child safe. The pure, completely natural and safe mattresses are aimed at children over two years old and up to around 12 years of age – dependent on weight of the child. It’s a medium-firm support mattress as recommended by The Children’s Sleep Charity.”
